SEAoO News

We, the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio (SEAoO) Board of Directors, support the joint statement and Call to Action ( from our parent organization The National Council of Structural Engineering Association (NCSEA), Coalition of American Structural Engineers (CASE), and Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) prompted by the tragic events of recent weeks. Therefore, we ask that our members continue to act in a manner that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion within our profession. We recognize and understand change is everyone’s responsibility and is only possible through sustained collective action as individuals at the organizational, company and societal levels.

The SEAoO Board of Directors is committed to and supports the NCSEA joint Call to Action in partnership with other state structural engineering associations. SEAoO will support these efforts by:

  • sending a representative to the newly formed NCSEA joint committee to collaborate and coordinate on actions to improve equity and opportunity in our profession
  • sharing NCSEA resources for our members on the topics of racism, discrimination, and equality specific to the Architectural, Engineering & Construction (AEC) industry and design professions
  • working with the NCSEA Structural Engineering Engagement & Equity (SE3) committee to collaborate on additional dimensions of diversity in the profession and consider programs to commit to greater engagement and equity accordingly
  • continuing to engage with student chapters at the university level to increase the diversity of engagement in programs that lead to careers in structural engineering through our professional outreach, mentoring and student scholarship programs.

For those interested in helping to be a part of lasting change in our local communities, please reach out to your region lead for information on how to support the Call to Action initiatives. For those interested in joining a SEAoO SE3 committee that will support the efforts of the NCSEA SE3 diversity committee, please contact any Officer or board member (

2020 Award Recipients

Thank you to all of the students that applied for this year's award.

Although the normal school year was disrupted and we are all experiencing a pandemic, we received a great number of Undergraduate and Graduate applicants and a fantastic variety of topics.

Congratulations to this year's Award Recipients!  Below are this year's recipients along with the title and link to their paper, and a quick Q&A session with each.

Thank you for all of the professionals involved to help promote this opportunity and review the applications.

Jobsite Tours

As universities make decisions on how to open back up in Fall, there may be opportunities to go on job site tours.  The safety of our students and professionals is our top priority therefore we are following guidelines set forth by each university and local/national jurisdictions to monitor if job site tours are safe and feasible.

If you believe that a virtual job site tour could be accomplished, please email me to get in contact with your local SEAoO student chapter and schedule a student site visit for next year!

Thank you,

Bernie Kooi, PE, SE, LEED AP

  1. Professional Member: Members that are licensed professional engineers.
  2. Associate Member: Members that graduated with a structural engineering-based degree (undergraduate or graduate) within the past 4 years.
  3. Student Member: Members enrolled full-time in a secondary or post-secondary school.
  4. Member: Members that DO NOT qualify as member types #1, 2, or 3.

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, please email us at [email protected] to change your member category and ensure you receive appropriate voting rights and Young Member emails.

  • Did you become a PE since your last renewal?
  • Did you graduate since your last renewal?

SEAoO Annual Conference

Mark your calendars! The 2021 Annual Conference is scheduled for September 16-17, 2021 at the Columbus Airport Marriott.

SEAoO was able to renegotiate the contract with the Marriott. Most of the speakers scheduled for 2020 have recommitted to presenting in 2021. It is a blockbuster line up!

We realize many of our members rely on the conference to accrue PDHs. In order to plan accordingly for PDH accumulation, SEAoO will provide a list of continuing education and learning opportunities in a separate email and in upcoming newsletters.

The Conference and Education Committees are compiling lists of presentations, either as webinars or on-demand learning. Annual Conference vendors are being contacted for a list of topics. The presentations will comply with AIA regarding format, learning objectives and continuing education. If there are topics of interest you know of or would like to add to the list, please contact:

Education Chairman Antonio Verne  E: [email protected]

Annual Conference Co-Chairmen Frank Monastra E: [email protected] or Aimee Pergalsky E: [email protected]

Thank you and keep it safe out there people!
