What Structural Engineers Should Know About Building Above Mines  (1.5 PDH)

Dr. Gennaro G. Marino, P.E., president and chief engineer of Marino Engineering Associates Inc., Urbana, Illinois, nationally recognized experts in coal mine subsidence.

Mine subsidence engineering is a multi-discipline field in engineering.  This presentation will explain the fundamental elements of underground mining as it relates to overlying construction.  Various construction site-mining scenarios will be given, and an understanding of the various risk factors will be provided.  The presentation will also cover how the engineer can approach mining related problems, the pros and cons.  Cost effective measures where subsidence mitigation is necessary will be discussed.  The talk will touch on all aspects of subsidence engineering providing case history examples, and focusing on mine subsidence conditions found in the Midwest.

Dr. Gennaro G. Marino received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1985 from the University of Illinois.  His thesis topic was related to mine subsidence and structural response to subsidence over room and pillar mines.  Dr. Marino is a licensed P.E. in 15 states, a member of ASCE, SME, and ASTM, and has worked in mine subsidence for over 30 years.  Dr. Marino has researched and consulted on all aspects of subsidence engineering with government agencies, engineering and architectural firms, surface owners, as well as pipeline, insurance and mining companies.  His work includes planning, mining, and abandonment stages of room and pillar to high extraction work.  Dr. Marino has authored over 70 articles and publications on subsidence topics.  Dr. Marino has recently been selected as the Central Illinois, ASCE Civil Engineer of the Year for 2011.  Marino Engineering Associates, Inc. was chosen as 1st runner-up for the Central Illinois, ASCE Civil Engineering Project of the Year for 2010.
