1. Magnum Helical Piles (Soil Screws), (1.0 PDH)


This presentation will discuss Magnum light and high capacity foundation solutions, consisting of Steel Helical Foundation Piers (“soil screws”) and Steel Push Piering Systems (“friction piers”).  Magnum provides a variety of pier capacities ranging from 8 to 200 tons.  The systems can be used in new construction, for retrofits to existing structures, and for temporary shoring.  The systems can be installed very economically and quickly in any kind of weather and are not subject to delays from ground water and caving soils.  Magnum is a national company located in Cincinnati Ohio, with over 40,000 commercial and residential foundations supported by their products.  This presentation will discuss the capabilities and limitations of the Magnum foundation solutions, and many case studies including the Cleveland RTA, Ohio State University MRI Research Facility, and other Ohio and national projects.  Magnum soil screws and friction piers discussion will consist of the following.

2. AISI S213-07 Cold Formed Steel Framing - Lateral Design (1.0 PDH)

The 2009 IBC Section 2210.6 states that all cold-formed steel light-frame shear walls, diagonal strap bracing that is part of a structural wall and diaphragms used to resist wind, seismic and other in-plane lateral loads shall be designed in accordance with AISI S213 (S213-07 North American Standard for Cold-formed Steel – Lateral Design).  This course will provide an overview of the AISI S213 standard, including a design example, in an easy to understand format.  Upon completion, the attendee will have a general knowledge of how requirements from AISI S213 affect the design of cold-formed steel light-frame structures.
