8th Annual UC SEAoO Student Mentoring Night  (1.0 PDH)

An evening for Structural Engineers - Seasoned, Young and Prospective.  Hosted by our UC SEAoO student chapter.

This is a mixer event to acquaint young engineers with the trials and triumphs of our profession and will benefit both our experienced and future structural engineers. Students interested in the structural engineering profession should attend to gain insight on the road ahead.  To ensure a good career fit, students need to explore all of their options (work vs. grad school, new construction vs. renovations, bridges vs. buildings vs. construction vs. product sales vs. inspection vs. research, etc.). At this meeting, three recent graduates will be presenting their project and job experiences.  The goal of the night is to showcase various routes within structural engineering that students can pursue after graduation, and this year we will focus on various project types (residential, bridges, and higher education/healthcare/commercial).  Seasoned engineers will also attend and facilitate dinner discussion and encourage our students.  Please dress in business attire.

  1. Blake Stephens, P.E. - Burgess & Niple
    • Blake is a Bridge Engineer with Burgess & Niple's Cincinnati office.  He has experience in design and analysis of transportation structures of various size and complexity ranging from large urban interchange projects to rural route single span bridges and various size retaining walls.  Blake received his BSCE in 2015 from the University of Cincinnati and is currently pursuing a Masters from the University of Cincinnati.
  2. Jason Hubbell, E.I. - Schaefer
    • Jason is a Design Engineer with Schaefer in Cincinnati, specializing in the design and analysis of K-12 educational, medical and commercial structures.  He has experience in projects of varying size, complexity, and material type including steel, concrete, wood and masonry.  Previously, Jason worked as a high school Spanish teacher before returning to school to earn his engineering degrees from the University of Cincinnati (BSCE '15, MEng '16).
  3. Rachel Chicchi, PhD, SE, PE – University of Cincinnati
    • Rachel is an Assistant Professor of structural engineering at the University of Cincinnati. Her research focuses on steel building behavior and design under seismic and fire events, as well as anchorage in concrete. Rachel received her BAE/MAE (integrated bachelor/master of architectural engineering) from Penn State University (’09) and her PhD in civil engineering from Purdue University (’17). After graduating from Penn State, Rachel worked for 4 years as a structural engineer for Cannon Design, an architectural engineering firm in Buffalo, NY.
