Failures and Problems Seen on Structural Plans and How to Avoid Them  (1.5 PDH)
SEAoO + AIA Cincinnati, Lunch Meeting
, Tuesday 6-25-13

Steve Schaefer P.E., Schaefer, Inc.

Based on his experience reviewing structural plans for Hamilton County, Steve will show examples of common problems and omissions. He will also discuss structural problems he has investigated and provide a checklist to help avoid these problems on your projects.

In order to finish by 1:15 pm, the presentation will begin promptly at 11:45 am.  Please plan to arrive by 11:30.

This presentation covers structural information the lead Design Professional needs to know to oversee proper planning, coordination and implementation of building design.  Concepts are illustrated by examples of deficiencies and failures.

  1. Know the structural data required by OBC and or IBC to be shown on drawings.

  2. Be able to use the check list to verify that your drawings or your structural engineer’s drawings have not omitted needed structural items.

  3. Learn the roles of floor and roof diaphragms, shear walls, vertical bracing and rigid frames for providing the lateral load resistance of buildings.

  4. Understand how to provide a proper lateral load path for foundations and wood framing.
