Structural Engineering Issues Today
Round Table with Presentations and Discussion
  (1.5 PDH)

This will be a casual meeting with local engineers making short presentations followed by brief question/answer/discussion sessions.  Planned topics include:

  1. Section 1807.2.1 of the IBC/OBC.  A change in 2009 requiring the engineer to consider lateral pressure all the way to the bottom of a footing key.
  2. Lack of sill plate anchorage in residential construction.
  3. Architectural vs. Structural drawings for masonry projects and field variations.
  4. Dealing with improper modifications made by others to existing buildings (e.g. holes in diaphragms, openings in shear walls).
  5. Cracking caused by galvanic reaction of rebar in foundation walls.
  6. Appendix D anchor design software packages and how their default assumptions differ.
  7. Real design and detailing (logical, specific) vs. typical details (you figure it out) vs. BIM (it’s in the model).
  8. Lessons learned from a major lawsuit.
