Integration of Next Generation Materials in the Welding Industry (1.0 PDH)

Presenter:
Michael Eff, B.S, M.S., EWI.

Presentation Abstract:

Manufacturing in America is undergoing a revolution with the implementation of new materials which extend component lifetime, improve performance, and decrease the weight of both structures and vehicles. Next generation material advances in aluminum and steel have increased material strength, reduced density, while maintaining excellent fatigue, elongation, and corrosion resistance. The processing of these materials is complex and is often a multi-step process which custom tailors the material’s microstructure (microscopic structure). The materials are optimized for performance but often are not created with real world manufacturing in mind. Machining, forming, and welding can be a challenge with these materials. Weldability of next generation materials is extremely low as using traditional welding approaches results in flaws and poor joint performance, rendering the benefits of the next generation materials useless.  In order to take advantage of new materials on the marketplace, manufacturers and fabricators must adopt a new approach to joining and manufacturing.

EWI is a world leader in welding technology and works closely with many US and international manufacturers to tackle joining and manufacturing problems. This presentation will focus upon new welding and joining techniques implemented to help industry overcome the challenges associated with next generation materials. The presentation will also address some of joining challenges present in next generation aluminum and steel components, and provide an approach for integration of these materials into the structural community

Presenter Bio:

Michael Eff works as an applications engineer in EWI’s Resistance and Solid State Welding group. His technical expertise lies in the areas of friction stir welding (FSW), linear friction welding, and other solid state joining technologies. Since joining EWI as a technician in 2008, he has specialized in solid state welding technologies, which include: FSW, friction stir tool material selection, solid state metallurgy, linear friction welding, rotary friction welding, and FSW of hard materials.

Michael has advanced FSW and linear friction welding processing techniques for a variety of materials including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, titanium, nickel based alloys, and copper. He has also played a critical role in furthering FSW tool materials, which are typically tungsten based alloys.

Michael has a very diverse educational background. His master’s degree focused heavily upon the process and applications of welding, specifically welding thick section steel with FSW. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate with a focus on joining dissimilar materials, and the intermetallic compounds which may form during joining. Prior to coming to EWI Michael worked for GEM Inc. as a metal tradesman where he took part in a variety of arc weldingprocesses.
