Presenter Bio:

Tom Elliott is the Director of Industry Development and Technical Services for the International Masonry Institute (IMI) for Ohio and Northern Kentucky. He has over 32 years of experience in the field of masonry, first as a bricklayer then serving as a foreman on multiple large masonry projects throughout Ohio. He gained valuable insight into the contracting side of the business having been the owner of a masonry contracting business for 6 years. Tom further gained insight serving as a field superintendent and then worked as a project manager for one of the larger restoration contractors in Ohio.

The International Masonry Institute (IMI) is a non-profit alliance of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers and the contractors who employ them. The IMI offers technical assistance, training and education not only for the contractor and craftworkers, but also the design community. IMI technical staff can review plans and specifications (usually when the project is in the design phase), any unique substitution requests, shop drawings, product data and other information when the designer has questions. IMI technical staff can provide periodic jobsite visits to observe the work in progress and review the construction for compliance with masonry codes and design intent.

IMI technical staff can moderate or participate in a pre-construction conference attended by representatives of the Contractor and the mason contractor, including the bricklayers.  This conference would provide a review of code requirements for masonry construction and techniques for best practice.  Understanding that the bricklayers are trained, skilled union craftworkers, the information will be presented as a review and is intended to clarify expectations on the job and to open a dialog before work begins.
